The Story

A Summary

Darwin has never once eaten his fill. Orphaned young and raised under the sagging tent of the Skittish Circus, he earns his keep in greasepaint and a painted-on smile — tumbling, dodging, and being laughed at for pennies he never sees.

Wandering the cobbled lanes after a show, hunger gets the better of him outside a bakery window fogged with warmth. Inside: golden loaves, still steaming. Outside: Darwin, weighing the cost of one small theft against the ache in his stomach. The bread wins.

He runs. He hides. He eats — and for one perfect moment, it's the best thing that's ever happened to him. Then the guilt arrives, sudden and enormous, and Darwin finds himself alone in a quiet chapel, quite certain that something up above is looking directly at him.

Darwin mid-tumble on a circus pedestal, curtains drawn back behind him.
The Cast

Who's Who

Darwin the clown, standing in his ruffled Victorian clown costume. Darwin turning around in a full 360-degree spin.

Darwin

The Clown

A scrawny, wide-eyed orphan performing with the Skittish Circus. Sweet-natured and hopelessly hungry — his painted smile has never quite matched what's underneath it.

Baker, a gruff Victorian bread-maker in an apron and cap, holding a rolling pin.

Baker

The Baker

Proprietor of Daily Bread. Weary, exacting, and fiercely proud of every loaf that leaves his ovens — which makes one going missing a very serious matter indeed.

Willow, an elegant Victorian bakery customer in a blue dress with a watch-chain and locket.

Willow

The Customer

A poised, well-to-do patron of the bakery, in the wrong (or right) place at the wrong moment — her morning about to cross paths with Darwin's.
